Posted June 18, 2009 - The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 included a provision known as the "Red Flags" Rule, which took
effect in January 1, 2008, although the compliance deadline was extended to August 1, 2009. The rule requires
many businesses and organizations to implement written Identity Theft Prevention Programs designed to detect the
warning signs or "red flags" of identity theft in their day-to-day operations, take steps to prevent the crime, and
mitigate the damage it inflicts. By identifying red flags in advance, you will be better equipped to spot suspicious
patterns when they arise and take steps to prevent a red flag from escalating into identity theft. The Red Flags Rule
is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
